So you want to transfer data between 2 PCs or between a PC and a laptop,the cheapest way you can do it using your ethernet cable.

Just plug the cable between the lan cards of both the computers and change the ip of one to 192.168.1.1 and other to 192.168.1.2.

Now open ‘my network connections” and run the network wizard and see to it that both the computers are under the same workgroup and then restart both the PCs.
Go to ‘entire network’ in my network connections and there you can see the other computer name though which you can browse the contents of that computer,of course you need to make the folders shared.
